The need to correct this mistake was quickly recognised, however, despite the wise guidelines of the European Commission, isolated national initiatives still too often dominate. It must apply to all that the existential conditions of the internal market, such as the opening of borders in the Schengen area, should not be suspended unilaterally. Economic recovery without a functioning internal market would be an illusion. That is why each Member State must, in its own interest, seek and respect European coordination. The aim must be to restore the integrity of the internal market for workers too and to remove obstacles to labour mobility in the EU. The German and Luxembourg economies want to play their part in combating the COVID-19 crisis. To this end, reliable framework conditions are indispensable for a well-functioning internal market with free movement of workers and cross-border services

Photo from left to right: Peter Clever, member of the BDA executive board, René Winkin, General Manager of FEDIL, Jean-Louis Schiltz, Vice-President of FEDIL, Steffen Kampeter, General Manager of BDA.

Press contact FEDIL
Dora Da Costa, Communication Officer
dora.dacosta@fedil.lu
T +352 43 53 66-620

Joint Declaration of BDA – Confederation of German Employers’ Associations and FEDIL 26 August 2020, Berlin – The COVID-19 pandemic has led many Member States to close their borders instinctively due to infection reasons, thus de facto suspending the European internal market and the Schengen area.
