Decarbonization of the transport* and construction sectors by 2050

Environment & Energy

(* aviation, shipping, road, rail)

CONCERNS: Corporate representatives from the aviation, shipping, road, rail, and construction sectors

BACKGROUND: The EU’s decarbonization agenda for 2050 mandates a rapid transition in national economies, requiring shifts from fossil-based to decarbonized energy sources across various sectors. Currently, this transition is impeded by a planning dilemma of supply and demand: future energy infrastructure must be designed to accommodate anticipated low-carbon energy demands, yet sectors may only adapt their energy consumption patterns based on the availability of these infrastructures.

To address this, a first workshop will convene stakeholders from road transport, aviation, shipping, and construction along with the transmission system operator, Creos Luxembourg, part of Encevo Group. The objective is to discuss each party’s requirements and expectations concerning the trajectory towards the 2050 climate goals. The focus will be aligning the supply and demand of carbon-neutral gases like hydrogen and biomethane alongside low-carbon and renewable electricity within these sectors.

The workshop aims to foster an exchange of information regarding the transmission system operator’s (Creos) investment constraints and the decarbonization strategies, reflections, and plans of the participating sectors and actors. Ultimately, the workshop intends to:

  1. Cultivate a shared understanding of the challenges related to demand and consumer-side issues in deploying decarbonized gases and renewable electricity.
  2. Identify and address the gaps between Creos and the consumers in the road transport, aviation, shipping, and construction sectors to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
